Situation Report Midnight 16th April

Orders issued previous day:

French

1. Augereau to march to Pedagiera and attack that place off the march
2. Massena to march to Ceva and attack that place off the march
3. Serieur to march to Ceva and furnish Massena with whatever support he requires

Piedmontese

Bellegard to march east from San Michele and assume a blocking position between that place and Lesegano.

All others to hold.

War Diary Situation Report midnight 16 April

1. Augereau's march delayed, the roads are in a bad state. He remains a days march away from Pedagiera.
2. Massena has reached Ceva. His men have bivouacked for the night, piquets have been thrown out. He will attack at first light without waiting for Serieur who has been asked to come with all haste.
3. Serieur is half a days march away from Ceva, the men are tired and the road is bad. He has stopped for the night, received Massena's request and will march to the sounds of the guns at first light.
4. Bellegarde has assumed his blocking position as ordered.

Reflections on the Campaign

While it's still fresh in my mind... This campaign has been an enjoyable diversion while in isolation and then in lockdown. I've learned a number of things... 1. A general lesson: this hobby is infinite. You know all those incomplete projects or ideas for projects that you are going to finish off when you have time/have a holiday/retire? You won't. It's never ending and limitless so enjoy what you can do and don't feel bad about what you don't or can't do. And stop buying stuff you aren't going to use anytime soon. Who buys stuff they will never use in their lifetime - and know this (subconciously or otherwise) apart from wargamers? I'm sure there are some people but in our hobby it seems the norm. 2. I got to play some games that were of a nature I would never play normally. Okay, I don't normally play solo so that's a bit of an obvious point. Battle of Voltri Day 2 11 April 1796

At first light on 11 April Massena confronted the Austrian forces led by Pittoni and Vukkasovich immediately west of Voltri on the Savona road. Cervoni's brigade has tranferred to Massena's command who positions it on the French right with the light infantry in the vineyards. Dommartin's legere are thrown out in a skirmishing cloud in front of Joubert's brigade who has drawn up his six battalions in attack column. The Austrians, although they are outnumbered are committed to advance. To remain immobile will mean they will suffer from the attention of Massena's sole battery of horse artillery and any retirement could swiftly deteriorate into a rout given the river at their back and proximity of the French. Neither army has any cavalry and the only artillery present is a French horse artillery battery attached to Dommartin's legere brigade.
