Spigno: map and order of battle

The Austrians are tasked with delaying the French advance and extricating as many of their troops across the Bormida as possible. The French are seeking to force a crossing of the Bormida and march on Acqui before Austrian reinforcements make that place difficult to capture

The above photograph shows Spigno from the east. The Austrians will deploy in the marked zone and have to try and delay the French advance and retreat across the only local crossing point at the Spigno bridge. The river is impassable i.e. there are no fords.

Another view of the battlefield. Bonaparte has assumed command of Serieur's division and approached Spigno yesterday along the road that leaves the table to the right. As his column reached the environs of the town he swung west and positioned his troops off table to the south and west of the Austrian position. Light skirmishing took place overnight between the piquets of both sides. The Austrians were alarmed to see camp fires that indicated they faced a full division of French troops. Despite this, and presuming a French attack at first light, the Austrian commanders opted to fight a delaying action.

Fighting the battle and victory conditions:

Battle commences at first light and may last for up to 32 turns (16 each) when night falls.

The Austrians win if they succeed in exiting half of their units off the table or breaking the French.

Any other result is a French victory.

The Austrians break if more than half their units are shaken or destroyed.

The French break if one of their brigades is broken. A brigade is broken if more than half its units are shaken or destroyed.

The French move first
